An 8-foot green Statue of Liberty replica, damaged after nearly 50 years, has been removed from Duluth’s Harbor Drive for storage.
An 8-foot replica of the Statue of Liberty, a longtime Duluth landmark, has been removed during Harbor Drive’s seawall reconstruction and is now stored on city property.
Donated in 1976 by Ray Bartholdi, a descendant of the original statue’s sculptor, the replica was one of hundreds made by the Boy Scouts of America for their 40th anniversary and painted green, not naturally oxidized.
It has suffered structural damage and paint loss over nearly 50 years.
Though the redeveloped Harbor Drive is now popular, many residents miss the statue.
City officials say it’s unlikely to stay in storage long, as several groups have expressed interest in relocating it, but no plans are confirmed.
The statue is among several artworks temporarily held by the city.
