Dr. William Foege, a pioneering public health leader and key architect of the smallpox eradication campaign, has died at 89.
He developed the "ring containment" strategy in Nigeria in the 1960s, targeting close contacts of infected individuals with vaccines, a method critical to the global effort that led to smallpox being declared eradicated in 1980.
Foege served as CDC director from 1977 to 1983 and held leadership roles at The Carter Center, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Task Force for Global Health, which he co-founded.
He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012 and is credited with saving hundreds of millions of lives.
