Cumbria’s police federation backs potential merger to cut bureaucracy and boost frontline policing, pending financial approval.
The Cumbria Police Federation may back a merger with a neighboring force if it reduces bureaucracy and reinvests savings into frontline policing, aligning with Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood’s proposal to consolidate England and Wales’ 43 police forces into about 12 larger ones.
While federation chairman Ed Russell supports the idea if it centralizes back-office functions and preserves local policing, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Dave Allen opposes it, citing financial disparities due to differing council tax levels and warning of a “postcode lottery” in funding.
The final decision will depend on financial feasibility and Treasury oversight.
