Charan Hembram, a Santali author and composer from Mayurbhanj, has been nominated for the 2026 Padma Shri for his three-decade-long work in preserving the Santali language and tribal culture through education, literature, and traditional dance.
He founded schools, authored five books, and combated superstition.
Alongside him, linguist Mahendra Kumar Mishra, folk artist Seemanchal Patro, and Ikat weaver Sarat Kumar Patra were also honored with the Padma Shri, recognized for their contributions to folklore, folk theatre, and traditional weaving.
The Union government announced the awards on the eve of Republic Day, with Odisha’s Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi calling the recognition a source of pride for the state’s cultural heritage.
