Azerbaijan opens permanent exhibit on 1960s–80s nonconformist artists, showcasing their blend of tradition and modernism.
The Azerbaijan National Art Museum has opened a permanent exhibition honoring the "Generation of the Sixties," a group of nonconformist artists who defied Soviet Socialist Realism from the 1960s to the 1980s.
Supported by bp and Greentech Solutions, the project renovated 800 square meters of exhibition space, installing new lighting, flooring, and frames to better display works by key figures like Mirdzhaavad Javadov, Tofig Javadov, Ashraf Murad, and Fazil Najafov.
The exhibit, curated by Shirin Melikova, highlights their fusion of Azerbaijani traditions with modern avant-garde styles and includes a video by contemporary artist Orkhan Huseynov linking past and present.
The initiative, part of bp’s broader cultural investments in Azerbaijan, aims to preserve and share this pivotal chapter of national art history.
