Assam's CM claims only Bengali-speaking Muslims are targeted in voter drive, denies wrongdoing.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on January 24, 2026, that only Bengali-speaking Muslims, referred to as 'Miyas,' are being targeted in the state’s voter revision drive, denying any harm to Hindus or Assamese Muslims.
He claimed the process is legal and aimed at protecting Assam’s identity, rejecting opposition allegations of voter suppression and manipulation.
Sarma dismissed reports of hill evictions as misinformation, asserted land rights have been granted to hill residents, and accused the Congress of favoring Miya candidates.
He also announced plans to reveal alleged links between Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi and Pakistan by January 31.
The Election Commission has not yet responded to claims of irregularities.
