Dismantling of the 111-year-old Pamban Railway Bridge in Tamil Nadu began in February 2026, following the 2024 inauguration of a modern replacement bridge.
The original 1914 structure, a historic sea bridge with a manually operated lift span, had deteriorated significantly due to corrosion and age, with recent attempts to open its central span failing.
The removal, led by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited at a cost of ₹2.53 crore, will proceed in stages over four months to ensure safety and precision.
The project follows the old bridge’s permanent closure in December 2022.
Local residents have urged preservation for heritage and tourism, but the government has not confirmed plans to save the structure.
