U.S. consumer sentiment rose to 56.4 in January 2026, the highest in five months, according to the University of Michigan, up from 52.9 in December, though still well below the 71.7 level from January 2025.
The Current Economic Conditions Index climbed to 55.4 and the Expectations Index to 57, both improving month-over-month but remaining below year-ago figures.
The gains were broad-based across demographics, with inflation expectations falling to 4.0% from 4.2%.
Despite the improvement, concerns over high prices persist, with 45% citing them as harming living standards—up from 34% a year ago—and 73% saying it’s a bad time to buy vehicles.
