A 2025 UK trial over historic grooming gang charges collapsed after jurors broke rules by texting about the case.
A high-profile 2025 trial in Manchester involving six men accused of historic sexual offences linked to a grooming gang collapsed in December when a judge discovered jurors had formed a WhatsApp group to discuss the case, violating court orders.
Despite being instructed not to conduct independent research or discuss the case outside the jury room, some jurors admitted planning to watch a broadcast on grooming gangs, with one stating they would do so anyway.
The judge, Matthew Corbett-Jones, ruled the misconduct irreparable, citing risks to fairness and public confidence, and discharged the jury.
The defendants—Tahir Rashid, Mohammed Saleem, Iftaq Hussain, Sucklane Shah, Arshad Mohammed, and Amjad Mahmood—deny all charges.
A retrial is scheduled for August 2026.
