Senator Warner urges Rubio to act on Pakistan’s human rights abuses, including political arrests and repression of dissent.
US Senator Mark Warner has urged Secretary of State Marco Rubio to address human rights concerns in Pakistan, citing mass arrests of political opponents, journalists, and activists, particularly around the 2024 elections.
He highlighted the UN’s finding that former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s 2023 arrest lacked legal basis and appeared politically motivated, along with in absentia life sentences for journalists and threats of military trials for civilians.
Warner also raised alarms over transnational repression targeting Pakistani dissidents and their families abroad, including in the US and UK, and called for investigations and international cooperation to ensure accountability and protect democratic rights.
