Quebec removes British crown from coat of arms, symbolizing growing independence from monarchy.
Quebec has removed the British crown from its official coat of arms, a symbolic step toward affirming its distinct identity and autonomy.
The change, announced January 23, 2026, by Justice Minister Simon Jolin-Barrette and French Language Minister Jean-François Roberge, reflects declining ties to the British monarchy among Quebecers.
The updated emblem will feature the fleurs-de-lis, lion, and maple leaves but exclude the crown, which was added in 1939.
The new design will be used in official communications and lieutenant-governor medals, while existing emblems on buildings and furniture will remain unchanged for preservation.
The move follows recommendations to remove colonial symbols and align provincial imagery with contemporary values.
