Ontario’s top judge, Geoffrey Morawetz, retires May 15 after modernizing the justice system with digital reforms and presiding over a landmark tobacco settlement.
Geoffrey Morawetz, chief justice of Ontario’s Superior Court, will retire on May 15 after seven years in the role and 21 years as a judge.
He led efforts to modernize the province’s justice system, advancing a shift from paper-based to digital processes, including launching a Toronto-based online portal for civil and family court cases, with plans to expand to criminal matters and the entire province by 2030.
He also oversaw a 2024 review of civil court rules to boost efficiency and presided over a landmark $32.5 billion settlement in a tobacco insolvency case.
His tenure helped position Ontario as a leader in judicial digitization.
