Nevada universities approve rising tuition to avoid staff layoffs amid funding shortfall.
The Nevada System of Higher Education approved a phased tuition increase, raising fees 3% in 2026-2027, 4% in 2027-2028, and 5% in 2028-2029 for four-year universities, with smaller hikes for community colleges, to address a projected $46.5 million funding shortfall.
The move, passed 8-5, aims to prevent nearly 317 staff and faculty layoffs, including 81 at UNR, and support ongoing operations and salary adjustments.
The decision follows concerns over financial sustainability and declining state support, despite student opposition over affordability.
