The 32nd Zigong International Lantern Festival opened January 23, 2026, in Sichuan province, China, launching preparations for the Lunar New Year, which begins February 17 as the Year of the Horse.
Over 200 handcrafted illuminated lanterns, created by about 1,200 workers, depicted animals, mythological figures, and historical scenes, including a 210-meter “Magical China” display inspired by the Kunpeng and an 180-meter “Legend of Mulan” exhibit with galloping horses.
Made from straw, chillies, and recycled bottles, the displays symbolize good fortune and guidance, key Lunar New Year themes.
The event drew families and visitors, continuing a centuries-old tradition.
