India’s UPI to trial cross-border QR payments in Japan in 2026 for Indian tourists.
India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is set to trial expansion into Japan in fiscal year 2026, enabling Indian tourists to make QR-code payments using their Indian bank accounts via UPI-enabled apps.
The initiative, led by Japan’s NTT Data and India’s NPCI, aims to simplify cross-border transactions as Indian visitor numbers to Japan rise.
While rollout details remain limited, the trial marks a key step in UPI’s global growth, following its success in India where it handled 185.8 billion transactions in 2024 and accounted for 58% of in-store payments.
