India drafts rules to give Vande Mataram same official status and protocols as its national anthem.
India’s government is creating formal guidelines for the national song Vande Mataram, aiming to give it the same official status and ceremonial protocol as the national anthem, Jana Gana Mana.
A high-level meeting by the Ministry of Home Affairs is considering rules for its performance in schools, government events, and public gatherings, including whether standing is mandatory and if disrespect should be penalized.
While the song holds equal constitutional recognition, it currently lacks legal protection and specific usage rules, unlike the anthem, which is backed by the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act.
The move, driven by the ruling BJP, seeks to restore the song’s historical significance amid a year-long national celebration through November 2026, though no final decisions on penalties have been made.
