Illinois state highways caused 37% of fatal crashes over five years, more than interstates.
A new analysis of fatal crashes in Illinois over five years found state highways were the deadliest road type, responsible for 37% of the state’s 5,524 fatal crashes, surpassing interstates despite common assumptions.
State highways, along with local streets, interstates, and U.S. highways, accounted for 26%, 21%, and 16% respectively.
The most dangerous individual roads include I-55, I-57, I-94, I-80, I-290, US-45, I-90, I-74, SR-3, and I-294, each with over 30 fatal crashes.
These roads are heavily traveled and often feature high speeds, intersections, and mixed traffic, increasing accident risk.
The findings, based on a nationwide federal crash database, highlight that familiar, daily commute routes pose significant dangers and underscore the need for greater awareness and safety improvements.
