Illinois governor revives bill to force insurance refunds on excessive hikes, after 27% State Farm rate jump.
Governor J.B. Pritzker is reviving a stalled Illinois bill to empower state regulators to require insurance companies to issue refunds when premium hikes are deemed excessive, following a 27% average increase in State Farm home insurance rates last summer.
The proposal, which would not require prior approval for rate changes, aims to add accountability without disrupting fair market practices.
Pritzker says Illinois currently lacks enforcement power, unlike 41 other states, and points to Texas as a model.
State Farm opposes the bill, warning it could reduce competition and raise premiums, citing inflation and extreme weather-related costs.
The legislation previously passed the Senate but stalled in the House.
