Greece has introduced a bill to parliament proposing life sentences for migrant smugglers and direct deportation for convicted migrants, along with harsher penalties for NGO members and legal migrants aiding irregular arrivals.
The law, criticized by 56 NGOs including Doctors Without Borders, allows revocation of NGO registrations based on charges alone, not convictions.
It follows the January 15 acquittal of 24 aid workers, including Sarah Mardini.
The government also plans to expand legal migration through streamlined work visas, a new tech worker visa, and extended student permits, alongside vocational training for asylum seekers in high-demand sectors.
