Florida has scheduled Melvin Trotter, 65, for execution by lethal injection on February 24, 2026, for the 1986 murder of grocery store owner Virgie Langford during a robbery in Palmetto.
Governor Ron DeSantis signed the death warrant, making Trotter Florida’s second execution of 2026.
Trotter was originally sentenced to death in 1987, but a Florida Supreme Court ruling led to a resentencing in 1993 due to legal errors.
Evidence included a T-shirt with Langford’s blood type and Trotter’s handprint at the scene, along with a description of the attacker using a Tropicana badge with the name “Melvin.” His legal team plans to appeal to both the Florida and U.S. Supreme Courts.
