Fifteen female inmates in Rio de Janeiro won acclaim in a gospel and Brazilian music contest aimed at rehabilitation.
Fifteen female inmates at Rio de Janeiro’s Djanira Dolores de Oliveira women’s penitentiary participated in the third annual “Voice of Liberty” singing contest on January 23, 2026, performing gospel and Brazilian popular music in a purple-themed event designed to promote rehabilitation through art.
The women, who rehearsed for months, received support from staff and volunteers, with winners chosen by a panel including actor David Brazil and singer Maurício Mattar.
Fernanda Fernandes Domingues, 36, won first place, calling music a source of empowerment, while others described the event as a form of emotional liberation and a step toward future goals, including performing publicly.
The contest is part of Rio’s broader efforts to foster hope, reduce tension, and support inmate well-being through cultural engagement.
