FEMA extends Maui wildfire housing aid to Feb 2027 due to ongoing recovery challenges.
FEMA has extended temporary housing assistance for survivors of the 2023 Maui wildfires until February 2027, following a request from Hawaii Governor Josh Green and approval from Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The assistance benefits nearly 1,000 displaced households who are still experiencing housing insecurity in one of the country's most expensive and competitive rental markets. The fires destroyed 2,200 structures, killed 102 people, and displaced 12,000 residents, the majority of whom were renters. Previous extensions had extended support until February 2026, but ongoing recovery challenges—including limited housing stock, Maui's remote location, and low rental availability—required another extension. FEMA has provided rent assistance, temporary shelters, and leased units, but some survivors face eligibility requirements and frequent relocations. The decision acknowledges that recovery efforts cannot be limited by arbitrary deadlines.
