EnergySolutions plans to restart the Kewaunee nuclear plant in Wisconsin, seeking NRC approval for carbon-free power by 2038–2039.
EnergySolutions has notified the NRC of its intent to apply for a license to restart nuclear power generation at the Kewaunee Power Station in Wisconsin, marking a key step toward potentially reviving the shuttered plant.
The project, led by EnergySolutions with WEC Energy Group, aims to provide reliable, carbon-free energy and could bring jobs and tax revenue to the region.
The plant, closed since 2013 and currently decommissioning, would not include wind or solar development, as confirmed by the company.
While the process is in early stages and faces regulatory hurdles, construction could begin in the early 2030s, with operation possible by 2038 or 2039 if approved.
