David Avalos charged with DUI causing death in Robbins hit-and-run that killed scooter user Sammy Simmons on Jan. 9, 2026.
David Avalos, 38, of Blue Island, has been charged with aggravated DUI causing death and leaving the scene of an accident after a Jan. 9, 2026, hit-and-run in Robbins, Illinois, that killed 63-year-old Sammy Simmons, who was using a mobility scooter in a crosswalk at 139th Street and Kedzie Avenue.
Authorities say Avalos was driving a minivan, had been drinking, and fled the scene.
He was arrested on Jan. 21, appeared in court, and was ordered held without bond.
The Cook County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
