Cuban immigrant Geraldo Lunas Campos died at an ICE facility after a suicide attempt and alleged excessive force by guards.
Geraldo Lunas Campos, 55, a Cuban immigrant, died on January 3, 2026, at the Camp East Montana ICE detention facility in El Paso, Texas, after attempting to hang himself, according to a 911 call from private security contractor Lt. Paul Walden.
The El Paso County Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide caused by asphyxia from neck and torso compression, with injuries consistent with multiple guards holding him down and exerting pressure.
ICE initially made no mention of the suicide attempt or physical restraint, but later admitted Campos violently resisted staff during intervention.
Witnesses reported that at least five guards restrained him, with one applying neck pressure until he passed out.
The facility, which opened in 2025 near Fort Bliss, will house thousands of immigrants.
It is unclear whether any external agency is conducting an investigation.
