Chinese space roses germinated after suborbital flight, advancing breeding and tech goals.
Chinese "space roses" have successfully sprouted after a suborbital flight aboard the Lihong-1 Y1 spacecraft, marking a milestone in China’s space breeding program.
The rose seeds, from Nanyang, Henan Province, were exposed to cosmic radiation and microgravity at 120 kilometers altitude during a 300-second flight launched from Jiuquan on January 12.
The capsule safely returned via parachute and delivered the seeds to the national rose germplasm bank for cultivation.
Researchers aim to develop new rose varieties with improved disease resistance, longer blooming periods, and unique colors through space-induced mutations.
The mission also tested microgravity laser additive manufacturing equipment and demonstrated the Lihong-1 Y1’s potential for reusable scientific and commercial space missions.
