Alabama will split public and private high schools into separate classes for playoffs starting fall 2026 to ensure fairer competition.
The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) has approved a major restructuring that will separate public and private schools for postseason and championship competitions starting in fall 2026.
The change, passed 13-2 by the Central Board, aims to improve competitive fairness by aligning schools within similar size and funding categories.
Public schools will return to a six-class system (1A–6A), with 6A including the 32 largest schools, while private schools will compete in two classifications: Single A and Double A.
Regular season play will still allow mixed matchups.
Full details on regions, tiebreakers, and playoff formats are pending.
The move eliminates previous adjustments meant to balance competition and reflects a shift toward equity amid concerns over private school financial advantages.
