A 74-year-old man with Parkinson’s disease, Keith Wilson, survived a 60-meter fall down a Lake District mountain after landing feet-first in soft snow.
Climbing Great End in Borrowdale, his footholds gave way, pulling his ice axe from his grip, but he stabilized himself using his gear and sheltered in a bivvy bag for four hours in cold conditions.
His climbing partner reached a signal and alerted rescuers; despite poor weather halting helicopters, Keswick and Penrith Mountain Rescue teams conducted a nine-hour operation, winching down and lowering him 400 feet to safety.
Wilson sustained only a fractured shoulder, walked to an ambulance, and was taken to Cumberland Infirmary.
He praised the rescuers and plans to donate 25% of his book’s proceeds to Mountain Rescue England and Wales and Parkinson’s UK.
