A West Australian breast cancer researcher pleads not guilty to assault charges involving bodily harm in front of two children.

Dr. Indunil Weerasena, a West Australian breast cancer researcher, has pleaded not guilty to charges of assault involving bodily harm with aggravating circumstances, allegedly committed in front of two children in City Beach. The 50-year-old oncologist, formerly of Fiona Stanley Hospital and now at St John of God in Bunbury, was charged in December and appeared in Perth Magistrate’s Court, where his legal team requested time to review surveillance footage. He previously led a state-funded $1.2 million breast cancer research project focused on an aggressive, hard-to-detect form of the disease. Despite the charges, his medical practice remains unrestricted, according to the Australian Health Practitioners Agency.
