Two foreigners were charged under Malaysia’s new anti-littering law, with one fined and the other’s case postponed.
Two foreign nationals, a Bangladeshi man and an Indonesian woman, became the first people charged under Malaysia’s new anti-littering law, which took effect January 1, 2026.
They were charged for littering in Johor Bahru on New Year’s Day and appeared in court on January 23.
The Indonesian woman pleaded guilty, was fined RM500 with a 15-day jail option, and ordered to complete six hours of community service.
The Bangladeshi man, who requested an interpreter, had his case adjourned to January 28.
Since the law’s implementation, SWCorp has issued 418 littering notices nationwide, 103 to foreigners, with 99 approved for prosecution.
The law allows fines up to RM2,000 and up to 12 hours of community service, with non-compliance risking additional fines of RM2,000 to RM10,000.
