Texas sent more residents to nine states than any other state from 2020 to 2024, per Census data.
Texas led the U.S. in supplying new residents to nine states—Alaska, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico, and Oklahoma—between 2020 and 2024, according to U.S. Census Bureau data, despite adding 2.1 million people and being the second-most populous state.
Its large population base drives high migration volumes.
California, Florida, and New York also ranked among top sources of out-migration.
In most states, international immigrants were the primary source of new residents, but domestic migration dominated in Idaho, Kansas, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
