Stephen Byrne, 44, sentenced to 7.5 years for knife-threatened burglary at Dublin retreat, 12 months suspended.
Stephen Byrne, 44, was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for an April 2024 aggravated burglary at a Dublin retreat center, with the final 12 months suspended.
He pleaded guilty to breaking in, threatening two Carmelite brothers with a knife, and stealing €350.
The attack, which occurred at 1:30 a.m., left both brothers injured after a struggle.
Byrne, homeless and battling addiction since age 42, was arrested using fingerprint evidence while on bail.
The judge called the incident terrifying, particularly for the older victim, but reduced the sentence due to Byrne’s remorse, guilty plea, and past productivity.
The sentence, backdated to December 15, 2025, reflects time already served.
