Scotland gifts NYC a baby box to support Mayor Mamdani’s plan to fight child poverty.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani received a baby box from the Scottish Government, part of Scotland’s 2017 nationwide program that provides free boxes with essentials like clothing, books, and a thermometer to new parents, doubling as a safe sleeping space.
Over 360,000 boxes have been distributed, with 90% acceptance among eligible families.
The gesture, made by Scotland’s Social Justice Secretary Shirley Anne-Somerville, aims to support Mamdani’s push for a similar program in New York to combat child poverty and rising living costs.
The initiative, rooted in a century-old Finnish model, now operates in over 90 countries, including a U.S. federal pilot, and Scotland has offered collaboration as New York develops its plan.
