Saraki warns Nigeria’s democracy is at risk without security, jobs, and reform despite 26 years of survival.
Former Senate President Abubakar Bukola Saraki warned on January 23, 2026, that Nigeria’s 26 years of democratic survival since 1999, while resilient, does not guarantee success if it fails to deliver security, economic opportunity, justice, and effective governance.
Speaking at the Daily Trust Dialogue, he stressed that democratic continuity without quality is hollow and urged unity beyond partisan divides ahead of upcoming elections.
Acknowledging achievements like peaceful power transitions and freedom of expression, he called for urgent reforms in judicial independence, anti-corruption efforts, and election credibility, emphasizing that the true measure of democracy lies in tangible outcomes for citizens.
Saraki advierte que la democracia de Nigeria está en riesgo sin seguridad, empleo y reforma a pesar de 26 años de supervivencia.
