Rick Berg, a North Dakota lawmaker and alumnus, is named interim NDSU president effective Feb. 9, succeeding David Cook.
Rick Berg, a former U.S. congressman and North Dakota state lawmaker, has been named interim president of North Dakota State University, effective February 9, 2026, succeeding David Cook, who is leaving to lead Iowa State University.
The State Board of Higher Education appointed Berg unanimously after a closed review process.
Berg, a 66-year-old NDSU alumnus with a degree in agricultural economics, served in the U.S. House from 2011 to 2013 and in the state legislature for 26 years, including as Speaker.
He is also a Fargo-based businessman and founder of several companies.
Cook’s last day is February 8, after which he will advise NDSU through the end of the month.
A search for a permanent president is underway, with applications due February 16 and a decision expected in March, with the new leader set to begin this summer.
