Philadelphia proposes closing or merging 20 schools by 2027–28 to fix aging buildings and inequities, pending board approval.
The Philadelphia School District has proposed closing or consolidating 20 schools over the next decade to address aging infrastructure, declining enrollment, and inequitable resource distribution, with changes affecting schools across the city, including major high school reconfigurations in West Philadelphia.
The $2.8 billion plan, which includes modernizing 159 buildings, co-locating six schools, and constructing one new school, will not take effect until 2027-28 and requires school board approval.
While district leaders say the plan is based on data and community input and aims to improve academic outcomes and reduce student transitions, it has sparked strong opposition from city council members, families, and community groups who criticize the process, fear negative impacts on students and neighborhoods, and demand greater transparency and support.
The proposal is set for review by the school board on February 26, 2026.
