New Zealand invests $10M to upgrade Wainui Marae, boosting culture, jobs, and resilience for the Ringatū community.
The New Zealand government is investing over $10 million to upgrade the Wainui Marae in Ōhope, Bay of Plenty, supporting the 130-year-old Ringatū community.
The project, led by Ministers Shane Jones and Tama Potaka, will build a modern complex with a wharenui, wharekai, wharetāonga, and wharepaku, enhancing resilience and serving as a cultural, educational, and civil defence hub.
It will generate income through tourism and events, create 71 construction jobs—including apprenticeships—and support ongoing employment for Māori youth.
The funding, awarded to Ringatū Church Incorporated, continues a government effort to strengthen key Māori cultural sites like Waitangi, Parihaka, and Rātana Pā.
