Mizoram's chief minister pledged to push for Mizo language inclusion in India’s Eighth Schedule, citing widespread support and its established status.
On January 22, 2026, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma affirmed plans to follow up on efforts to include the Mizo language in the Eighth Schedule of India’s Constitution, granting it official status.
The move, backed by a near-completed report from the Eighth Schedules Study Group, reflects strong public support across Mizoram.
The group highlighted Mizo’s official status since 1974, recognition by the Sahitya Akademi, availability for advanced academic study, and global reach with over 2.2 million speakers.
Though classified as "vulnerable" by UNESCO, Mizo is now in Google Translate and spoken in all Indian states.
The CM praised the work and pledged to advance the proposal through a new task group.
