Lt. Col. Seeta Ashok Shelke and Sikkim’s disaster agency won India’s top disaster award for lifesaving flood response and volunteer training.
Lieutenant Colonel Seeta Ashok Shelke and the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority have won India’s 2026 Subhash Chandra Bose Aapda Prabandhan Puraskar.
Shelke was honored for leading rescue and relief efforts during the 2024 Kerala floods and landslides, including building a 190-foot Bailey Bridge and mobilizing 150 tons of equipment.
The SSDMA received the award for its Aapda Mitra network, which trained 1,185 local volunteers across Sikkim’s six districts, improving disaster response and helping save 2,563 lives during past events like the 2016 Mantam landslide and 2023 Teesta floods.
The award was announced on January 23, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary, recognizing national advancements in disaster management under the Union Home Ministry’s guidance.
