Germany and Italy urge EU to speed reforms to boost competitiveness against U.S. and China.
Germany and Italy are pushing the European Union to accelerate economic reforms, warning that delays could weaken the bloc’s competitiveness amid growing pressure from the U.S. and China.
In a policy paper ahead of a February summit, the two nations call for reducing bureaucracy, speeding up permitting, and eliminating internal trade barriers equivalent to tariffs of up to 44% on goods and over 110% on services.
They advocate for faster regulatory approvals, elimination of outdated laws, deeper integration in key sectors like energy and digital industries, and the creation of a pan-European stock exchange.
The proposal also urges faster trade talks with India, Australia, the UAE, and ASEAN, while preparing defensive trade measures.
Leaders are expected to seek specific commitments, not just principles, at upcoming EU meetings to strengthen Europe’s economic resilience.
