A former Australian hotel manager was sentenced to six years in prison for raping and assaulting multiple employees.
Stewart Burchell, former manager of the Roebuck Bay Hotel in Broome, Western Australia, has been sentenced to six years in prison for raping a female employee and indecently assaulting four others between 2017 and 2023.
The court heard he exploited his authority, with victims suffering lasting psychological harm.
Despite his defense arguing the offenses were non-violent and sporadic, the judge rejected claims that victims could have reported the abuse due to the power imbalance.
Burchell, who has a history of rehabilitation efforts and a broken marriage, showed no remorse, and plans to appeal.
He will be eligible for parole in 2029.
