A Cork home bought for €26,620 was mostly paid for with money from a romance scam, a court ruled.
A Cork property purchased in 2015 for €26,620 was funded largely by money from a "sinister" romance fraud, a High Court judge has ruled.
Thomas Humphreys, linked to an organized crime group, used proceeds from a scam run by his brother-in-law, Patrick “Pizza Face” O’Brien, who defrauded a vulnerable woman of over €260,000.
While €5,000 came from a legitimate injury settlement, the court found Humphreys failed to prove the rest of the funds were lawfully obtained.
The judge noted Humphreys did not address his criminal history or explain the money’s source, concluding most funds came from crime.
