The parents of conjoined twins Tom and Sawong, born in Papua New Guinea, say they are grateful they pursued treatment abroad after doctors in Port Moresby told them to return home with no hope of survival.
The twins were flown to Sydney Children’s Hospital on December 4, where a 12-hour separation surgery was performed on December 7.
Tom died shortly after, while Sawong, who had multiple congenital conditions, is recovering and no longer needs a ventilator.
He is gaining weight and may return home by late February.
The family faced delays, funding issues, and conflicting medical advice before the surgery.
They celebrated Sawong’s 100th day and plan to return to their village to scatter Tom’s ashes.
