A 44-year-old California woman, Yahui Zhu, was arrested in Midland County, Michigan, on January 16 for her role in a fraud scheme that allegedly stole over $100,000 from two seniors through gift cards and cryptocurrency.
Michigan State Police intercepted her as she traveled to meet the victims in person, preventing a cash exchange.
Zhu was arraigned on January 20 on a charge of false pretenses involving $20,000 or more, posted a $500,000 bond, and is due back in court on February 3.
Authorities warn that scammers are increasingly using in-person tactics and emphasize that the FTC does not threaten individuals or demand money transfers.
