Assam forest staff rescued a one-horned rhino calf separated from its mother in Kaziranga on Jan. 22, 2026.
Forest staff in Assam rescued a male one-horned rhino calf on January 22, 2026, after a 24-hour search failed to reunite it with its mother in Kaziranga’s Burapahar Range.
Found on January 21 in the Sarali area, the calf was transported to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) for care.
The CWRC, established in 2002, has rescued over 7,397 animals across 357 species, with 65% successfully released.
The calf joins two others recently translocated to Kaziranga under international conservation protocols, including pre-release acclimatization.
The operation highlights Kaziranga’s ongoing efforts to protect the endangered greater one-horned rhinoceros.
