Alex Cole-Hamilton now backs small nuclear reactors for Scotland’s energy future, urging evaluation alongside other sources.
Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Alex Cole-Hamilton has reversed his stance, now supporting small modular reactors (SMRs) as part of Scotland’s energy strategy.
Speaking in Inverness, he said SMRs should be evaluated like other energy sources, citing potential for low-carbon power, job creation, and economic growth, particularly at the Dounreay site.
He criticized the Scottish government’s ideological opposition to nuclear, warning it risks losing investment and innovation to England.
His party aims to end that stance and promote energy security and affordability.
While SNP leaders remain cautious over costs, Cole-Hamilton maintains SMRs could offer a viable, safe, and flexible energy option if proven economically sound.
