The African Development Bank has approved a $16.5 million loan to support Kenya’s 35 MW OrPower Twenty-Two geothermal plant in the Menengai field, near Nakuru.
The project, developed by private firm OTTL with steam from state-owned GDC, will generate 301 GWh of clean energy annually, reduce diesel reliance, cut emissions by 1.9 million tonnes over 25 years, and support Kenya’s goal to expand geothermal capacity to 1,824 MW by 2030.
Kenya Power will purchase all output under a 25-year agreement.
Total debt financing reaches $64.4 million, including IFC support, with the project costing $91.9 million.
The initiative exemplifies public-private collaboration in advancing clean energy and energy security.
