UK to spend £453M upgrading Typhoon jets with new radar, securing 1,300 jobs.
The UK government has awarded a £453 million contract to upgrade RAF Typhoon fighter jets with advanced ECRS Mk2 radar systems, enhancing their ability to detect and track multiple air and ground targets while countering electronic jamming.
The project, led by BAE Systems, Leonardo UK, and Parker Meggitt, will secure up to 1,300 skilled jobs across Scotland, Lancashire, and Luton, supporting over 20,000 jobs in the broader defence sector.
The upgrades aim to maintain the Typhoon fleet’s operational edge through the 2040s amid rising security threats, including Russian drone activity.
This investment follows a £205 million engineering support deal and is part of a wider £650 million defence spending push, including an £8 billion fighter jet export deal with Turkey.
The UK continues its plan to increase defence spending to 2.6% of GDP by 2027.
