Two hikers, Christine Mutchler, 70, and Kathy Pickard, 76, died on January 14, 2026, when a dead fir tree fell on a popular trail in Washington state’s Olympic National Forest.
They were hiking with friend Kathy Todd, 74, to Lena Lake when they heard a loud crack and the tree collapsed.
Todd escaped unharmed, called 911, and was assisted by two emergency room doctors who were hiking nearby.
Mutchler was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle but died minutes before arrival; Pickard was pronounced dead at the scene.
Friends described the women as active, joyful outdoor enthusiasts who loved hiking and skiing.
