Solano County deputies are temporarily patrolling Vallejo to help with its police staffing shortage.
Solano County Sheriff’s deputies began patrolling Vallejo on Wednesday as part of a temporary partnership to address the city’s police staffing shortages.
Six deputies, a sergeant, a lieutenant, and a dispatcher are working four-day shifts from 2 p.m. to midnight, wearing county uniforms and using marked vehicles.
The effort, enabled by state legislation allowing retired staff to fill administrative roles, is funded entirely by Vallejo.
County deputies respond to general calls, while the Vallejo Police Department retains primary responsibility for traffic collisions, priority one incidents, and IHART calls.
The initiative, described as a moral responsibility, is a short-term solution due to limited capacity and staffing constraints.
